US cheese manufacturing is a large and operationally diverse industry. According to the USDA Dairy Products 2024 Summary, the United States produced 14.2 billion pounds of cheese in 2024, excluding cottage cheese.
For a private equity investor, knowing which companies participate in that market is only the starting point. The more difficult questions often sit inside the plants themselves.
How are production lines configured? Where does capacity sit? What affects throughput? How do packaging, quality and processing requirements change by cheese category?
These questions require professionals who have worked inside manufacturing environments.
A private equity client approached Networks X with a US production brief covering cottage cheese, natural cheese, string cheese and grated Parmesan. The client needed former professionals with practical knowledge of named facilities or broader corporate oversight of manufacturing operations.
The challenge was not finding food industry executives. It was building a focused group around particular products, plants and operating responsibilities.
The project examined how production economics and operating practices differed across the four cheese categories.
Relevant experience covered production, packaging, processing, sourcing, procurement, quality assurance, co-manufacturing, operations and demand planning. Professionals could qualify through direct plant experience or a headquarters role with oversight across several facilities.
Both perspectives mattered. Plant-level professionals could discuss staffing, line speeds, downtime, yields, bottlenecks and quality controls in a specific operating environment. Corporate manufacturing leaders could explain capacity allocation, production scheduling, milk sourcing and coordination across a wider network.
Recency was also important. The client preferred former employees who had left their relevant organisations no earlier than 2020, helping ensure that their experience reflected relatively current processes and operating conditions.
Networks X therefore mapped candidates across four dimensions: product category, facility exposure, operational function and employment recency. That made this a considerably narrower search than a standard food manufacturing project focused on one broad market.
Manufacturing operations can vary considerably, even within the same company.
One facility may manufacture cheese from the initial production stage, while another primarily converts, shreds, slices or packages finished products. Equipment, automation, warehouse capacity, labour requirements and line economics can also differ.
Networks X screened candidates against the operational questions behind the brief. These included process flow, throughput, packaging, quality, procurement, capacity, co-manufacturing and the balance between central oversight and plant-led decisions.
The resulting group included former professionals with experience across production leadership, plant operations and quality functions. Individual identities and employers are not disclosed in this case study.
This operational mix gave the client several ways to examine the manufacturing network without treating all cheese production experience as interchangeable. It also kept the project focused on production. Adjacent planning and supply chain knowledge was considered only where it directly affected plant performance, capacity or manufacturing decisions in everyday practice.

The client completed six one-hour consultations with four unique experts. Three experts completed one consultation each. One specialist was invited back for three separate conversations.

The wider group still provided variation across production, operations and quality. The repeated conversations added continuity as the client’s questions became more detailed.
This created a useful balance between breadth and depth. The client gained several independent views of US cheese manufacturing while retaining the ability to investigate selected production issues through follow-up discussions.
