Observability expert research: turning one brief into three prioritised workstreams

How Networks X structured a complex observability project so an investment firm could review the right evidence in the right order.

The observability market creates a research workflow problem

Large organisations rarely rely on one observability product. The Grafana Labs Observability Survey 2024 found that 70% of surveyed teams used four or more observability technologies.

For investors, this means platform selection is rarely a straightforward comparison. Enterprise decisions can involve overlapping tools, different technical use cases and several internal stakeholders. Understanding the market therefore requires separate research into customer purchasing, vendor execution and implementation.

A US investment firm asked Networks X to support an observability project covering 2 of the key players across the US, Western Europe and APAC. The client did not simply need relevant profiles. It needed three distinct searches, delivered in a clear order of priority over a two-week period.

Three expert searches, ranked by decision value

The client divided the project into three workstreams and specified the order in which profiles should be reviewed.

Enterprise customers came first. This stream focused on senior technology professionals with recent involvement in major observability platform decisions.

Recent former industry professionals formed the second stream. Their experience was relevant to questions about commercial execution, competitive positioning and growth within enterprise accounts.

Observability partners and consultants formed the third. This group could address vendor assessment, implementation and broader platform selection across complex technology environments.

The important point was not simply that the project contained three expert types. Each stream answered a different research need and carried a different level of priority for the client.

Networks X preserved that structure throughout sourcing. Profiles were separated by workstream rather than combined into one undifferentiated list. This gave the client a cleaner screening process and made it immediately clear why each candidate had been submitted.

From project launch to consultation within 10 days

Networks X submitted the first relevant profile within 72 hours of the project opening. The first consultation took place within 10 days.

Across the engagement, we submitted 13 distinct profiles and supported three completed one-hour consultations. This supported efficient review throughout the engagement.

The client received profiles in clearly labelled groups, allowing each candidate to be assessed against the questions assigned to that workstream. This made it easier to prioritise interviews, provide targeted feedback and continue developing the remaining searches.

The completed consultations supported different parts of the observability research without requiring the client to work through a large, mixed pool of general technology professionals. The project remained aligned with the original order of priority while retaining enough flexibility to pursue strong adjacent evidence when it emerged.

Networks X converted three observability searches into one prioritised workflow, delivering the first profile in 72 hours and the first consultation within 10 days.

Why expert research design matters

A complex brief does not always require one larger search. It may require several smaller searches, each designed around a different question, expert population and level of urgency.

Without that structure, clients can receive relevant-looking profiles that are difficult to compare. Research time then shifts from gathering insight to sorting candidates and correcting the search.

Networks X approaches multi-angle projects as a research workflow. We establish which questions matter most, determine who is best placed to answer them and organise delivery around the client’s preferred decision process.

For this observability project, that meant three distinct workstreams, separate profile delivery and parallel sourcing across international markets. Networks X submitted 13 profiles, delivered the first within 92 hours and supported three completed consultations.

The result was a clearer route from a complex brief to usable expert conversations.
